About Payson

Overview/Population
Payson is a town that is located in the northern region of Arizona. It has a population of 15,301. Payson is a part of Gila County. This city is often referred to as "The Heart of Arizona."

History
Most sources suggest that 1882 was the year that Payson was founded. In its earlier years, it was referred to as Union Park or Green Valley. The town's first post office was built on March 3, 1884. The town also had its first radio show in 1884. Payson has had a rodeo show every year since 1884.

During the 1920s, author Zane Grey wrote books about the Payson area. People began trying to get Payson incorporated into Arizona in the 1930s. During the 1950s, people began working on a road that extended from Payson to Phoenix. The road was completed in 1959. Payson was officially incorporated into Arizona in 1973.

Geography
Payson has a total land area of 19.5 square miles. The entire city is made up of land. Payson has an elevation of 5,000 feet. The city's population density is 723 people per square mile.

Education
The Payson Unified School District provides primary and secondary education to the children in Payson. A branch of Gila Community College is also located in this city.

Climate
Payson has a Mediterranean climate type climate. The city has very dry summers, but it experiences heavy thunderstorms during the fall and winter months. Like most other places that have a very dry climate, Payson is prone to forest fires. The average summertime temperature in this city is around 91 degrees Fahrenheit. The average temperature in the wintertime is around 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
