Payson had been founded in 1882 and its name was then Green Valley or Union Park. Its current name had been given after the senator Louis Edwin Payson. Located at an elevation of 4921 feet, Payton benefits from a gentle climate that allows tourists to explore the outdoor enjoying snow in the winter on top of the Mogollon Rim and very mild temperatures the rest of the seasons. There are 3 national forests surrounding the city of Payson: Coconino, Sitgreaves National and Tonto National Forest with the world's largest ponderosa pine trees. If you travel a few minutes from the city you will find Roosevelt Lake, central low elevation deserts, the Verde and Salt River reservoir systems and the large 40-acre Green Valley Park and Green Rumsey Park that hosts a community local pool. Much of the land is available for fishing, hiking, hunting, horseback riding, camping and many other outdoors activities.

Tonto Natural Bridge, the largest travertine natural bridge in the world, is located in the northwest side of Payson. In this area there are three golf courses that belong to several private country clubs.
